18th March 2024: Turns of the River, Turns of the Road

A parcel arrived yesterday containing reviewers’ copies of the latest titles from my publishing imprint, Cockatrice Books. The first is Gwyriad: Poems by Nigel Jarrett, sharp and striking in its poetic technique, reflecting on class, industrial heritage, and industrial decline, family and local history, and the history of the former Pen-y-Fal Psychiatric Hospital. The second is River of Hope by Roger Granelli, a novel set in what was then the French Congo at the lepers’ hospital run by Albert Schweitzer. It’s something of a treat, this novel, at once eminently readable, with a fast-past story, and an intricate portrayal of its African, European and American characters at the end at the end of the imperial age. Both titles are for sale from Cockatrice Books, and will be made available by major booksellers over the coming days.

Cockatrice will be a low-profile endeavour for a while. For health reasons I am not currently reading new manuscripts, and I am unable to promote existing titles to the extent that I would like. The Cockatrice authors, including myself, and I, will be much encouraged by purchases, shares, and Amazon reviews. Thank you.

Dangerous Asylums

‘In this exemplary collaboration between medical science and imagination, lives preserved in official records, in the language and diagnoses of their times, are restored not just to light, but to humanity and equality. This anthology is a resurrection.’
